Babies are easy to shop for and hard to shop well for. They will love the box, the ribbon and your car keys more than anything you buy. So the best gifts do one of two jobs: they match a real stage of development (staring, grabbing, chewing, cruising), or they make life measurably nicer for the grown-ups doing the 3 a.m. shift. Everything here does at least one.

We sorted the list by stage, because a newborn and a 10-month-old want very different things. Every toy here is labeled by its maker as suitable for its age group, nothing has small detachable parts, and prices run from an $18 teether to a pair of splurges that earn their keep for months. If the parents have a registry, check it first, then fill the gaps here.

In this guide: 12 gifts
  1. For the newest arrivals
  2. For grabbers, sitters and cruisers
  3. Cuddly, cozy and sentimental

Where Is {Name}? Search and Find Adventure

Adorabook

Best for: A first book they'll grow into

Too young to search? Not for long. This personalized search-and-find book hides a cartoon version of your baby in seven busy scenes, from the zoo to the beach, drawn from a photo you upload. For now it's a bright book to point at together; by three, they'll be finding themselves on every page and asking for it at bedtime.

Good to know: Babies chew paperbacks; the jumbo hardcover survives until they're old enough to hunt properly.

The Play Gym
Best overall

The Play Gym

Lovevery

Best for: The baby who will spend a year on the floor and deserves good scenery

Most play mats are a cushion with two dangling toys. Lovevery's is a stage-based system built around five developmental zones, with black-and-white cards for brand-new eyes, a mirror, an organic cotton teether, a batting ring and a Montessori-style ball for later months, plus a play space cover for the hiding games that come once baby is mobile. The mat and zones are machine-washable, and the gym is OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certified, made with real wood, silicone and cotton.

Good to know: At $150 it is a big spend for a play mat, so it works best as a group gift or a grandparent splurge.

No. 03
Winkel Rattle and Sensory Teether

Winkel Rattle and Sensory Teether

Manhattan Toy

Best for: Tiny hands that grab everything and gums that chew the rest

The Winkel is a baby-shower staple for good reason. It is a tangle of bendy, chewable loops with a soft rattle tucked inside the center cube, so it is easy for a newborn to grab and fun to shake once cause and effect clicks. It is BPA- and PVC-free, rated for babies from birth, and you can chill it in the fridge for a cool teether when the first teeth arrive. Manhattan Toy calls it its number one selling teether rattle.

Good to know: It cannot be submerged, steamed or sanitized, so cleaning means a damp, soapy cloth.

My First ABC Personalized Book cover

My First ABC Personalized Book

Adorabook

Best for: A first library with their name on the cover

A personalized alphabet book from A to Z with the baby illustrated as the star. Simple letter pages and bright art make it an easy first read-aloud, and their name and face on the cover turn it into a keepsake they'll grow into through the toddler years.

Good to know: It's a printed hardcover or paperback, not a board book, so it's best for reading together.

Baby Basics: COLORS Cloth Book

Baby Basics: COLORS Cloth Book

Twirl Books

Best for: The first book they can chew, crinkle and fling without consequences

Board books are great until a baby tries to eat one. This large, plush cloth book introduces 11 colors through bright, simple animal illustrations and adds 8 different textures to touch, which is exactly the level of literature a six-month-old appreciates. It is made from soft, non-toxic, machine-washable fabric, so drool and mashed banana are not a problem. It is labeled for ages 0 to 3, so it sticks around well into the toddler years.

Good to know: It teaches colors rather than telling a story, so pair it with a classic board book if you want a bedtime read.

For grabbers, sitters and cruisers

No. 06
Dimpl Stack

Dimpl Stack

Fat Brain Toys

Best for: The six-month-old who has discovered that everything is for poking

Fat Brain's Dimpl line is known for squishy silicone bubbles that babies push and pop on repeat. The Stack version puts one textured bubble on top of each of five cups, so the same toy works for popping, nesting, stacking big to small and clapping two cups together. The cups are durable nylon plastic made without BPA, and the set is rated for 6 months and up. Stacking cups like these keep earning their place well past the first birthday.

Good to know: The cups are plastic rather than wood, so this is a practical pick more than an heirloom one.

No. 07
Baby Tissue Box

Baby Tissue Box

PlanToys

Best for: The baby who has already emptied every wipes container in the house

Every baby eventually discovers the joy of pulling tissues out of a box, one after another, forever. PlanToys built a toy for exactly that: a small wooden bucket with holes in the top and bottom and four soft chiffon cloths to pull out, stuff back in and pull out again. It quietly teaches cause and effect, object permanence and grip. It is made in Thailand from chemical-free rubberwood with non-toxic glue and organic pigments, and it is rated for 6 months and up.

Good to know: With four cloths and a bucket under 5 inches wide, it is a small gift that is best bundled with something else.

No. 08
Flow 'N' Fill Spout

Flow 'N' Fill Spout

Yookidoo

Best for: Bath time that needs more entertainment than a rubber duck

This battery-powered spout suctions to the side of the tub and recirculates the bath water, so a press of the orange diver button starts a steady stream without touching the tap. Three stacking tumblers catch the flow: one makes a shower, one spins a propeller and one lifts a little float in a peekaboo window. It is rated for 9 to 36 months, so it grows from early sitting into full toddler splashing. Yookidoo says it meets ASTM and EN71 safety standards and is IPX7 waterproof.

Good to know: It needs three AA batteries (not included) and a Phillips screwdriver to open the battery compartment.

No. 09
Baby Walker
Splurge

Baby Walker

PlanToys

Best for: The almost-walker who cruises the furniture and wants an upgrade

A good push walker is the gift that turns furniture cruising into first steps. PlanToys' wooden version has two smart touches: a tension knob that controls how fast the wheels roll, so it will not shoot away from a wobbly new walker, and flexible headlights that bend like bumpers when it inevitably meets a wall. The handle height adjusts as baby grows, and the wheels have o-rings for traction. It is made in Thailand from chemical-free rubberwood and rated for 9 months and up.

Good to know: It is meant for babies who already pull up to stand, and it still needs a clear floor and a gate at the top of the stairs.

Cuddly, cozy and sentimental

No. 10
Bashful Beige Bunny, Original

Bashful Beige Bunny, Original

Jellycat

Best for: The future lovey that will be dragged through every milestone

There is a reason this floppy-eared bunny turns up at so many baby showers. Jellycat's fur is famously soft, the long ears are perfect for tiny fists, and the Original size (about 12 inches tall, 9 inches sitting) feels special without overwhelming a newborn. It is labeled as suitable from birth and tested to EN71, ASTM and ISO 8124 standards. Beige is the classic, but the Bashful family comes in plenty of other colors if you want something less expected.

Good to know: Safe-sleep guidance says to keep plush toys out of the crib for the first year, so this one is for cuddles and photos, not naps.

No. 11
Sleep Bag 1.0 TOG

Sleep Bag 1.0 TOG

Kyte Baby

Best for: The parents who would trade almost anything for one more hour of sleep

A wearable blanket is the safe-sleep answer to loose bedding, and Kyte Baby calls this its best-selling sleep bag. The fabric is the draw: 97% bamboo rayon with a little spandex, so it is very soft and stretchy, and the 1.0 TOG weight is meant for rooms around 69 to 73 degrees F. A J-shaped double zipper opens from the bottom for middle-of-the-night diaper changes, and a zipper garage keeps the pull off baby's chin. Sizes cover 7 to 50 pounds, with optional embroidery for $15.

Good to know: It cannot go in the dryer, so a family that does laundry on a schedule may want two.

No. 12
Baby Prints Photo Frame
Keepsake

Baby Prints Photo Frame

Pearhead

Best for: The parents who will want proof of how tiny those feet once were

Newborn hands and feet are only that small for a few weeks, and this kit makes capturing them easy. The white frame (17 by 9.5 inches) holds a handprint, a footprint and a 4-by-6 photo, and it comes with a clean-touch ink pad and imprint cards, so the ink goes on the card instead of the baby. The neutral beige lettering suits any nursery. At under $20 it is an easy add-on to a bigger gift, and it is the item most likely to still be on the wall in 20 years.

Good to know: The ink pad is sized for newborns (prints up to 2.25 by 3.5 inches), so this is a gift for the first weeks, not the first birthday.

Questions people ask

What is a good gift for a baby who already has everything?

Go for keepsakes or things that get used up or outgrown. A handprint frame, a well-made sleep bag in the next size up or a soft cloth book fills a real need without adding clutter, and registries rarely cover them. Simple wooden toys are also hard to duplicate. If you know the parents, ask what stage the baby is in, because a 3-month-old and a 10-month-old want completely different things.

Are stuffed animals safe for babies?

Plush toys labeled as suitable from birth are fine for supervised play and cuddles. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises keeping soft objects, including stuffed animals, out of a baby's sleep space for at least the first year, so the bunny belongs on the play mat and in the stroller, not the crib. Check the label for an age rating and testing to recognized safety standards such as ASTM.

When should a baby get a push walker?

Push walkers are designed for babies who can already pull up to stand and cruise along furniture, which often happens somewhere between 9 and 12 months. The PlanToys walker above is rated for 9 months and up. Look for one with adjustable wheel resistance, and skip sit-in baby walkers, which the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends against.
